How the number 1 is written
Braille has no separate cells for digits. The numeric indicator (dots 3-4-5-6) comes first, and the digits that follow are written with the letters a to j, where a is 1, b is 2 and j is 0. So 1 is ⠼⠁.
| Braille | What happens | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ⠼⠁ | on its own |
| 1:30 | ⠼⠁⠒⠼⠉⠚ | as a time — the colon ends the number, so the numeric indicator returns |
| $1.50 | ⠈⠎⠼⠁⠲⠑⠚ | as a price |
| 1 apples | ⠼⠁ ⠁⠏⠏⠇⠑⠎ | in a sentence, Grade 1 |
The same number in Grade 2
Numbers are written the same way in Grade 1 and Grade 2 braille — only the words around them are contracted. In a sentence: “1 apples” is ⠼⠁ ⠁⠏⠏⠇⠑⠎.
