Braille numbers

Braille has no separate cells for digits. A number is written with the numeric indicator — dots 3-4-5-6 — followed by the letters a to j, which stand for 1 to 9 and 0. Below are all ten digits, the numbers 1 to 100, and the rules for decimals, times, dates and letters after a number, in Unified English Braille (UEB).

How to write a number in braille

  1. 1. Start with the numeric indicator, ⠼ (dots 3-4-5-6).
  2. 2. Write each digit as a letter: 1 is a, 2 is b, and so on up to 9, which is i; 0 is j.
  3. 3. Keep going without another indicator. One numeric indicator covers every digit up to the end of the number, which is a space or most punctuation.

Braille numbers 1 to 100

The same rule gives every number. Numbers 1 to 9 are two cells, 10 to 99 are three and 100 is four.

Commas, decimal points and spaces inside numbers

A comma or a decimal point inside a number does not end it, so the numeric indicator is not repeated after them.

PrintBrailleWhat happens
1,000⠼⠁⠂⠚⠚⠚the comma (dot 2) keeps the number going
3.5⠼⠉⠲⠑the decimal point is dots 2-5-6, the same cell as a period
0.75⠼⠚⠲⠛⠑a leading zero is written like any other digit
1 000⠼⠁⠐⠚⠚⠚a space inside a number is the numeric space, dot 5

When the number sign is repeated

A colon, hyphen or slash ends the number, so the next group of digits needs its own numeric indicator. Times, phone numbers and dates show this most often.

PrintBrailleWhat happens
10:30⠼⠁⠚⠒⠼⠉⠚the colon ends 10, so 30 starts with the indicator again
555-1234⠼⠑⠑⠑⠤⠼⠁⠃⠉⠙the hyphen ends the first group of digits

Letters straight after a number

After a number, the letters a to j would be read as more digits. When one of them follows a number, the grade 1 indicator (dots 5-6) goes in front of it. Letters from k onwards cannot be digits, so they need nothing extra.

PrintBrailleWhat happens
3a⠼⠉⠰⠁a could be read as 1, so the grade 1 indicator comes first
3x⠼⠉⠭x cannot be a digit, so it follows directly
12B⠼⠁⠃⠠⠃a capital sign ends the number by itself
1st⠼⠁⠎⠞s is not a digit letter, so no indicator is needed
2nd⠼⠃⠝⠙n ends the number, so the d after it is a letter

Roman numerals

Roman numerals are letters, so they take no numeric indicator. Written in capitals they get capital signs like any other word.

Numbers in Grade 1 and Grade 2 braille

Numbers are written the same way in both grades. Only the words around them change, because Grade 2 contracts them.

Numbers in maths: UEB and Nemeth Code

Unified English Braille writes maths with the same digits shown here. In the United States, though, maths and science materials are usually transcribed in Nemeth Code, which puts digits in the lower part of the cell: 1 is ⠂ (dot 2) and 2 is ⠆ (dots 2-3). If numbers in a textbook do not match this page, that is probably why. Braillify writes UEB only.

The letters, punctuation and other signs are on the braille alphabet chart, and any text with numbers can be converted in the braille translator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the number sign in braille?
The numeric indicator, dots 3-4-5-6 (⠼). It tells the reader that the letters a to j that follow are digits. One indicator covers the whole number.
How do you write 10 in braille?
⠼⠁⠚ — the numeric indicator, then a (1) and j (0).
How do you write 0 in braille?
⠼⠚ — the numeric indicator followed by j, the tenth letter.
Why are braille numbers the same as letters?
Braille reuses the first ten letters for the digits, so ten cell patterns cover both. The numeric indicator removes the doubt: ⠃ alone is b, while ⠼⠃ is 2.
Do you need a number sign before every digit?
No. One numeric indicator covers all the digits that follow, including a comma or decimal point inside the number. It is written again only after something that ends the number — a space, a hyphen, a colon or a slash.
How do you write a letter straight after a number?
If the letter is one of a to j, put the grade 1 indicator (dots 5-6) in front of it, otherwise it would be read as another digit: 3a is ⠼⠉⠰⠁. Other letters follow directly, so 3x is ⠼⠉⠭. A capital letter ends the number by itself: 12B is ⠼⠁⠃⠠⠃.
Are numbers different in Grade 2 braille?
No. Numbers are written the same way in Grade 1 and Grade 2; only the words around them are contracted.
Why do numbers look different in American maths books?
In the United States, mathematics and science are usually transcribed in Nemeth Code, which writes digits in the lower part of the cell — 1 is ⠂ (dot 2) and 2 is ⠆ (dots 2-3). Everyday text uses Unified English Braille, shown on this page. Braillify does not produce Nemeth Code.
Can I convert numbers to braille automatically?
Yes. Type any text with numbers into the braille translator and it adds the numeric indicator, the grade 1 indicator and the capital signs for you.
